Flexibility plays a central role in the concept of Patient and Family Centred Care. At BC Children’s Hospital and Sunnyhill Health Centre the Telehealth program provides flexibility for patients and families in providing access to healthcare providers and services in the convenience and comfort of their home communities.
Telehealth allows patients and families, in even remote ares of the Province, to “meet” with their out-of-town (and out-of-Province) health care providers using a television screen, video camera and microphone which operates over a secure network. Even though there may be miles separating the attendees it is as if everyone were meeting in the same room. Patients and families must go to a designated spot in their home town or to the closest Telehealth facility but this type of meeting and service often results in reduced travel costs and time. Two patients speak about what the experience of using Telehealth was like for them.
To see if Telehealth is right for you and your family members health situation and to learn how to learn more about this patient and family centred option you can download the pdf format Telehealth brochure here. Also talk to your health care providers and ask if this option is available. Information can also be found at the BC Government website here or the Provincial Health Services Authority website here.
