YAC presents “Let’s Talk: a guide to teens and their health”

Hi! Our names are Christopher, Jacqueline and Elizabeth, and we are triplets.

This is us when we were little.

When we were born, Chris was able to go home at the expected time and did not require any special medical attention. Jacqueline and Elizabeth, however, had to be admitted to the special care nursery at Children’s Hospital for several weeks. The three of us continued to use the hospital’s services for the next 15 years. We have visited B.C. Children’s for stitches, pneumonia and sports-related injuries but for all purposes we were active, happy, healthy children. Over the years, Children’s Hospital has continued to provide care for our family. The exceptional service we have received inspired us to give back to the hospital. Joining the Partners in Care Youth Advisory Committee (YAC) gave us the perfect opportunity to do so.

The YAC is a group of past and current patients of the hospital. We meet monthly to talk about our experiences, give input on hospital projects, and work on projects of our own that give back to the hospital community. By providing a patient’s perspective, our group hopes to help other patients and their families have a more enjoyable experience at the hospital. The YAC also organizes fundraising and awareness events. The goal of these events is to educate people about the YAC, invite more members into the group, as well as to socialize with patients and their families. This past summer the YAC organized an ice cream social, and more recently, the week before Valentine’s Day, the YAC toured around the hospital wards and gave out hot chocolate and stickers to patients. It was a great opportunity to put a smile on the faces of patients.

On Thursday, May 16th the YAC will be hosting an event called “Let’s Talk: A Guide to Teens and Their Health.” The doors open at 6:30pm and the talk begins at 7pm. This event is open to anyone; you do not need to be connected to the hospital to attend. Parents, healthcare professionals, teens, kids, and families are all welcome.

Please join us in a panel discussion featuring members of Youth Advisory Committee, joined by adolescent health experts to discuss ways to support youth during their teen years. The panel will feature YAC members, a nurse, a parent, and a doctor. Audience members will have the opportunity to ask the panel questions, and meet other Youth Advisory Committee members.

Some topics we will be covering include:

  • Building good communication
  • Negotiating boundaries and independence
  • What ‘to do’ and ‘not to do’ at medical appointments
  • Reading body language and discussing tough topics
  • How to avoid being a “helicopter parent”
  • Understanding social media, texting and more!

This event is an awesome opportunity to ask questions and hear from doctors, nurses, and teens themselves! Entry is by donation (no one will be turned away for lack of funds). All proceeds will go towards supporting future events held by the YAC. Refreshments will be provided by the Partners in Care Patient & Family Advisory program

Please come out to participate in a fun discussion about teens and support B.C. Children’s Hospital! See our Facebook event page for more details. To see a map of the location (Ambulatory Care Building) click here.<meta name=”p:domain_verify” content=”4ed9dd2a396cca911dd06aada12f8c3a”/>
