Construction has been underway at the Oak Street Campus for months, in preparation for the new Acute Care Centre being built in late 2014.
We give construction updates here on a regular basis, but today it’s time for an overall project update.
On Thursday, the Redevelopment Team celebrated starting the 200-day countdown to April 28th, 2014 when the first phase of construction will be complete.
(There are 196 Days in the countdown as of today!)
By April 28th, 2014, there will be a developer on board, whose job it will be to design, construct, finance and build the new Acute Care Centre.
Here’s a snapshot of the major activities during phase one, (the past three years):
- 2012: built and opened the new Clinical Support Building to provide additional space on the site.
- Over 70% of 136 programs and services have been moved, 10 of which have been relocated offsite.
- By early 2014, four major clinics on site will have renovated and moved: Plastic Surgery, Occupational and Physical Therapy, Ophthalmology, and Orthopedics (including the Anatomical Pathology Lab.)
- Decommissioning A and L wings of the Shaughnessy Building will continue in preparation for demolition in the fall of 2014.
- Three additional Neonatal Intensive Care Unit beds have been created.
- Space for the University of British Columbia Medical School has been added.
- New site infrastructure has been created to support the construction of the new Acute Care Centre.

Update: this post had originally indicated that the construction underway now was due to the Acute Care Centre being built. This was incorrect. The current construction is in preparation for the ACC construction, as infrastructure is moved around to make room. The actual ACC construction is projected to being in the fall of 2014.
