Preparing for Surgery at BC Children’s: DOs and DON’Ts

surgery tourIf your child needs surgery, it can be a stressful time. Luckily, the online surgery tour on the hospital’s website helps you prepare. Here are some DOs and DON’Ts from the tour to help you prepare for your child’s surgery at BC Children’s Hospital:

DO listen to the Surgical Day Care Unit nurse. He or she will call you one business day before the surgery, between 11am and 6pm with important information. Have a paper and pen ready to take notes.

DO talk openly and honestly with your child about the surgery. Give them lots of opportunities to ask questions and share their fears or worries.

DO dress your child in comfortable clothing. Pajamas and slippers are great.

DON’T give your child anything to eat or drink before the surgery. The nurse will let you know how long your child has to fast.

DON’T worry. Your child will pick up on your anxiety, so relax. Instead, try to think of it as an opportunity to catch up on some reading or other fun activity while your child is in surgery.
